Bibo's In Town - A Short Story

The alarm was blaring and the emergency red lights were flashing in the Hamilton Research Centre. Everyone outside the maximum security cage was in fear  as they heard the creature bending the metal bars of the cage.

“Someone get me the tranquiliser. We don’ t know what it will do next. Let’s  control the situation before it gets too violent,” Professor Yackaranda commanded without taking his eyes off the creature.

In an instant, the creature fell asleep as the tranquiliser took its effect. It was sleeping peacefully and everyone adored it. Its fur was fuzzy and white as snow, it had big, round and piercing icy blue eyes with a tiny triangular nose with a short bushy tail. Its size was nothing more than a newborn baby. Like a human, it snored gently and breathed rapidly. The Professor knew that it was scared of them as they were afraid of it too. Just a few moments ago, it seemed so deadey…

“Bibo!” Professor Yackaranda announced, “That’s what we will name him. I’m taking him home to study. Take him to the unbreakable glass cage.”

That night, the Professor was reluctant to go to bed. The blood and tissue sample results were not out yet. He was worried that Bibo was hungry or thirsty but he knew that it would be risky to feed it. He went to bed with a heavy heart. His assistant, Pandolfo, was on duty that night.

The next morning, the Professor was horrified to see his lab in a topsy-turvy state; there was shattered glass everywhere, broken machines, shrapnel, bloodstains on the wall and floor. The glass cage was open and empty…

“What?! Pandolfo! Bibo! Where are you guys?” and the Professor’s voice went silent as he spotted  Bibo in a corner of the room under the table. He was chewing on a bone and his mouth was covered in blood. The Professor gently carried Bibo and locked him again in the cage. He was clueless about how it all happened.

The Professor had an idea and decided to replay the footage of what happened last night in his closed circuit television camera. What he saw sent a chill down his spine … he saw Pandolfo mopping the floor and going closer towards Bibo, opening its cage and stroking it gently. He carries it out of its cage and places it on the table counter. Unexpectedly, Bibo opens his mouth wide to reveal four rows of razor-sharp teeth. He starts salivating and attacks him brutally. Pandolfo has no time to eve react as Bibo goes for his head first. In a flash, it ate him up and spat out the bones.

Professor Yackaranda shook his head in disbelief and called President Lucas, “Send me backup now… I can’t do this alone.”
